Russian Club T-shirt

After many different ideas were gone over last semester, including a sunflower of course, and a matryoshka doll, the outline of the country itself, and cheburashka, there wasn't really a complete decision made. So, as I'm making a stencil for it - I looked at what would be easiest to make and came up with this - what do you think? If any of the other ideas sound better we can still do that - just let me know :)

See you all soon at the Inner Bean!

Planning time and a tiny bit of practice!

Hello Russian Club!

I have several points to make, and will be quick about it :)

1. T-SHIRTS!
I'll bring several designs we can choose from next week, just bring a t-shirt next wednesday and we'll make it! This is a stencil, I'll have several dyes mixed up and thickened that you can spray onto the stencil. Feel free to use several colors if you like and be creative! As to t-shirts, bring a light color that the dye will show up on. (I'll have black, red, blue, green, and violet)

2. BAKE SALE!
Lets plan for sometime before thanksgiving break? I will bring forest berry perogi, sweet quark perogi, and some other sweet baked things...I'll have to look through the cook book. I'll bring a cookbook next week and we can go through it. Not everyone needs to bake something, if you can just donate your time running the booth that'll be great! I will supply a table and the envelope of small bills to make change. Proceeds will go to help us send the box of donated art supplies to Maria's Children and if we have any left will help us go on a field trip! There are a few opportunities, lets each look up some Midwest Russian events and talk about it next week! :)

3. MOVIE NIGHT!
Look two posts back and vote for the movie you want to see! You can leave a comment even if you don't have a blogger profile, or you can email me at ccorn@g.emporia.edu, or let me know on facebook. Speaking of facebook - do you all think this blog is enough, or should we create a facebook group? Movie night, by the way, should be scheduled between thanksgiving break and the end of the semester. Lets schedule that soon and make posters! I can see about scheduling a room in Plumb hall.

4. SONGS!
Sorry, I have been extraordinarily busy lately, but you can all expect about 10 Russian songs as well as lyrics in both languages in your email by next week. Please let me know if you DON'T want that to go to your emporia email.

5. INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK Nov 12-16.
From buzzin:
Subject: DISPLAY YOUR CULTURE WITH PRIDE DURING INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK!
Date: Oct 10, 2012 3:32:24 PM
Are you interested in performing something fun and cultural for International Education Week?

The Office of International Education is going to present an International Culture Show that showcases cultural performances from any country and/or culture during International Education Week on Tuesday, November 13, 2012.

If you are interested in performing something (e.g. a song, dance, musical instrument, poetry reading, play, fashion show, demonstration, etc.) that represents a particular culture and/or country please email Dinusha at swarusav@emporia.eduwith your name (or name of group), description of the performance, and contact information by October 22, 2012.

If you want to form a group that represents a culture or already belong to a student organization that represents a culture you are more than welcome to participate in the event!

I think this could be fun! The only performance I can think of is that I can dance, and if any of you sing I can coach you on a GORGEOUS Russian song, and would even be ok performing with you, (I just don't sing much) It would be a good opportunity to set up a booth with some info about Russia and Russian club and why we exist.

6. RUSSIAN CLUB TONIGHT - I've had something come up and won't be able to make our club meeting ): For anyone who does meet up, here is something you can practice!

Colors~~~ let's talk about our favorite colors!

(Moi lyoubimi tsvyet...) (My favorite color...)
add to that your favorite color - listed below.

(notice there is no light blue (голубой) we'll talk about that color next week, as well as the two Russian blues which are very different in their meanings and uses.)

I advise you to print out the post on the alphabet and pronunciation and look at it as you practice. This will help you remember pronunciation better and which letters are which.

Have a lovely evening Russian Club! It is up to you if you meet this week without me, but I encourage you to continue getting to know eachother regardless of my presence. :) If you have never been to a meeting before and want to go, get in touch with me or our lovely secretary Stephanie Plummer. You will be getting this as a link in your email, so feel free to reply that way or by leaving a comment here.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on each point and on which movie you'd like to watch! They're all pretty awesome!

Upcoming Russian Holidays

Hello! My name is Stephanie and I am the Russian Club secretary.  Here's a little about myself in case you haven't been able to meet for Russian Club.  I became passionate for Russia after working with some Ukranian and Russian people while I was in Turkey.  After I came back to the States, I took a course in Russian History and began learning the Russian language.  I fell more in love with the country and plan to go there someday.  Actually, I also have a tattoo on my back left shoulder in cyrillic script. Enough about me, onto the more important stuff - Russia!!!

In lieu of Homecoming celebrations this past weekend and holidays coming up, we thought it would be fun to post some Russian holidays and how they are celebrated.  After all, who doesn't love celebrating things?

Unity Day is a public holiday celebrated on November 4.  This day celebrates the liberation of Polish and Lithuanian invaders from Moscow from an uprising led by Kuzam Minin and Dimitri Pozharsky in 1612.  It has also expanded to include celebration of the end of the Time of Troubles and Polish-Muscovite War.

In 1918, the Bolsheviks changed the holiday to November 7 to celebrate the October Revolution.  The October Revolution was when the Bolsheviks took control over Petrograd.  The Russian Federation made November 7 a regular day in 2005 and reestablished Unity Day on November 4 like it had been from 1612 - 1917.  The feast day for Our Lady of Kazan in the Russian Orthodox Church also falls on November 4.

Unity Day in Russia is celebrated in different ways.  Some lay flowers on the monuments of Kuzam Minin and Dimitri Pozharsky.  Others go to the concerts or exhibitions.  Most however see it as a day where they get a day off of work.  Russian Orthodox Christians attend a service for the feast day ending with a procession.  Many public figures speak on television about unity of ethnic and religious groups in the Russian Federation.

Like many holidays here in the States, Unity Day is celebrated although it may not be a primary holiday.  I hope you enjoyed the mini Russian history lesson! Remember to vote on a movie for our Russian movie night! Have a good upcoming week!

Music and Movies!

You should all be getting an email soon including some mp3s you can download; however, there is one song that I used to have on my ipod, but don't have anymore, but it's one of my favorites so I wanted to post it here for you. Click here.

Translation:

Sasha walked on the highway
From Ivanovo to Oskol,
From the Urals to Tuapse,
In all her glory,
In sneakers and jeans
Sasha was on the highway.

Sasha walked on the highway,
But in such places
Where its possible to drive insane
Looking around:
Abandoned houses
Broken tractors
It's like a war here
 was only yesterday.

Sasha walked on the highway
From Uglich to Sarov,
Between units
And the factories,
Where people work in smoke
And produce smoke,
which is not necessary for anyone
Neither dead nor alive.

Sasha was on the highway
From Donbass to Kuzbass,
Through the coal basin,
Where mined death
With coal in half.

Sasha walked on the highway
Through the wild region,
Where  "Gazelle"(something like combination of car and bus, produced in Russia)
Appears once in three days
To bus stop waiting for it
Go old people  and children .
Yes,there is no transport .

 Sasha walked on the highway
With instructions from home,
With sadness for all,
who is still alive
Went to our father -tzar,
By the boyars in the White House ( its our government's house in moscow)
Gazing at the sunset,
Almost running.

I myself have seen it
Between Nizhniy and Torzhok
And even gave her money
On the beer with a pie,
Do not cry, my country,
Hope, my people,
I believe that once upon a time
She will come to the finish point.

And tzar will start to panic,
And government will  gag
and simply give to all people money and land,
Everyone will laugh and love everybody...
Because its impossible that Sasha walked on highway for nothing.

A description about the song from my dear friend, Lera Privolneva:

(Sasha is personification of revolution, of the youth' hopes for good future - certainly youth can make revolution. But sure such hopes almost fantastic - not only because its impossible to change things quickly. Russian mentality is the main cause - endless patience of our people is actually the main problem, which preserved things as they are.)

Now, lets look at some movies we can choose from for a movie night!

Here are the movies to choose from, let me know your favorite! Some have trailers, so you can follow the link to watch them (some of the trailers are only in Russian, but the movies I have are all Russian language with English Subtitles.

Russian Ark

Watch trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J--TDEHizVA

Synopsis:
An unseen man regains consciousness, not knowing who or where he is. No one seems to be able to see him, except the mysterious man dressed in black. He eventually learns through their discussions that this man is a 19th century French aristocrat, who he coins the "European". This turn of events is unusual as the unseen man has a knowledge of the present day. The two quickly learn that they are in the Winter Palace of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the European who has a comprehensive knowledge of Russian history to his time. As the two travel through the palace and its grounds, they interact with people from various eras of Russian history, either through events that have happened at the palace or through the viewing of artifacts housed in the museum. Ultimately, the unseen man's desired journey is to move forward, with or without his European companion. Shot in one take, in one continuous shot. No rating info. About an hour and a half long.

Turkish Gambit

Watch the preview here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGu-_7PnBgA

Synopsis: One of the Erast Fandorin adventures (Sort of like Sherlock Holmes),
The film is based on the second book from the Adventures of Erast Petrovich Fandorin series of novels written by the Russian author Boris Akunin. The film takes place in 1877 during the Russian-Turkish war. Erast Fandorin has just escaped from Turkish prison and is trying to get on the Russian side as soon as possible to give important information about the upcoming attack of the enemy. On his way he meets Varvara Suvorova, a young lady who is going to see her fiancée - a soldier of the Russian army. Erast also knows that there is a spy somewhere in the Russian army, everyone is under suspicion...
No rating information. 108 mins long.

This song is part of the soundtrack: By Nogu Svelo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVa5riFPlE8 You can see more shots from the movie in this video as well.

The State Counselor

Watch the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzI0pYKko4E

Another Erast Fandorin adventure adapted from the book of the same name.
Begins with a murder on a train, A revolutionary organization is planning to assassinate the Governor of Moscow as the first step to overthrowing the Tsarist state. Detective Erast Fandorin attempts to counter them, but his efforts are hindered by suspicion that he himself is the murderer and his dealings with Prince Pozharsky. No rating information, but you can see from the trailer, there is some slight nudity at least. (We're all adults though, right? :D) 134 mins.

Everything Will be Alright

I'm sorry, I don't have a preview for this, but the entire movie can be found online on youtube.

Synopsis:
Kolya (Anatoli Guravlev) and Olga (Olga Ponezova) are stepsiblings who grew up together and loved each other ever since they were children. As expected, upon his return from military service, Kolya proposes and preparation for a wedding is under way. But the penniless couple doesn't win their parents approval–Kolya's mother is particularly discouraging, as all her life she has dreamed for her son to marry a rich girl with good background–and an apartment.

Into the chaotic town arrives Smirnov (Alexander Zbruev), old flame of Kolya's mother who's now a successful businessman, and his son Petya (Mark Garanok), a 20-year-old prodigy and Nobel Prize laureate. As soon as the dashing, educated youngster lays his yes on Olga, it's clear that a fateful night–and all kinds of complications–will ensue on the way to church altar.

It's to the credit of scripter Romanenko and director Astrakhan that, though they employ the basic structure of a fairy tale, there's still genuine suspense. To the last minute, it's unclear who'll be the lucky fellow to wed the charming, if also totally confused and unpredictable Olga.
No rating information. 110 mins long.

Rusalka

Watch the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ToV9bNQV7s

Her name was Alice, she lived on the sea. Her life was no different from others. She dreamed of ballet, sang in a children's choir and went to school. In six years, she stopped talking. At 17 she moved to Moscow. Exactly 18, she met him ... and disappeared ... as often happens in the city.
A bit bitter, a bit funny, magical and philosophical.

Gusarskaya ballada

Sorry, no trailer.

The Summer of 1812. A young girl decides to join a Husar squadron and fight against Napoleon. Dressed as a man she has a bit of a time adjusting to the rude Husar life styles. Musical Comedy. About an hour and a half.

Chelovek s kinoapparatom (A Man with movie-camera) Silent film from 1929

No trailer, but the full film can be found online on youtube.

Dziga Vertov's experimental film grew out of his belief, shared by his editor, Elizaveta Svilova (who was also his wife), and his cinematographer, Mikhail Kaufman (also his brother), that the true goal of cinema should be to present life as it is lived. To that end, the filmmakers offer a day-in-the-life portrait of a city from dawn until dusk, though they actually shot their footage in several cities, including Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odesa. After an opening statement, there are no words in the film (neither voice-over nor titles), just dazzling imagery, kinetically edited - as a celebration of the modern city with a marked emphasis on its buildings and machinery.

New composition performed by the Alloy Orchestra (1995), based on notes left by Vertov. It incorporates sound effects such as sirens, babies crying, crowd noise, etc.

White Nights

watch the trailor here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqUzTqdChNs

This one is an American made movie, but with a Russia-America plot, starring Mikhail Baryshnikov and  Gregory Hines.
Nikolai Rochenko, a Russian ballet dancer who 8 years ago defected to the West. He is in a plane flying over Russia when all of a sudden, a malfunction forces the plane to land in Russia. The KGB tells everyone that his injuries are so severe that he has to remain confide for a while. But in reality they want him to return to them, so they bring him to his old apartment and an American, Raymond Greenwood, who himself defected to Russia several years ago, is placed there to keep an eye on him. However, Rochenko is not about to give in and is determined to escape. So with help from his former lover, he gets word to the Americans. And even Raymond is started to be disillusioned with Russia, and he has to decide if he is going to do what he was sent to do or help Rochenko.

Stilyagi

Watch the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOwK0kr1gZI

This is the story of Moscow in the early fifties, in which young people have to fight for the right to not be like everyone else, but listen to different music, wear different clothes and of course, love.
While the Cold War heats up on the world stage, rebellious youth in 1955 Moscow wage a cultural battle against dismal Soviet conformity, donning brightly colored black-market clothing, adopting American nicknames and reveling in forbidden jazz. Straight-laced 20-year-old Communist Mels finds these brazen 'Stilyagi' shocking until he falls under the spell of one, namely Polly, and joins the new revolution. Soon he's a peacock, cavorting in the latest flashy fashions, sporting an enormous pompadour and wailing on the saxophone.

Ok, guys~ vote on the movie you want to see here in comments! We can discusss when to do it :)

Planning fun stuff!

This week we practiced talking about Russian foods (see the last post), enjoyed some chocolate, and chatted about a possible field trip down to Tulsa in order to buy some Russian goodies and maybe a trip to Kansas City for the National Russian Orchestra in February? What do you think?

Lets pick a date for our bake sale. Sometimes in mid to late November?

Next week I'll bring some cd's of Russian songs for you guys and a little present you can win with a tiny little quiz of your Russian skills! Don't worry - I'll give you the answer here in this blog post, so you ust have to practice it :)

I'm happy to announce that Stephanie Plummer will be our secretary; you'll be seeing her posting  on here occasionally from now on.

The positions of treasurer and historian are still open if there are any takers~ Oh, as well as Vice President, as Abby has resigned due to a busy schedule.

Also - Movie night! Lets plan this out next week as well. I will post a list of the movies I have before our next meeting. We can schedule a room in Plumb hall I believe, and post up some flyers around campus.

Ok, your chance to win the prize I will give away next wedensday is this:

I will say to you:

Два щенка щека к щеке щиплют щетку в уголке.
(Dva shchenka shcheka k shcheke shchiplyut shchetku v ugolke.)
Two puppies cheek to cheek nibbling brush in the corner.

The one who repeats it the clearest will win!

(This is gonna be a tricky little thing for me too XD)

And before I leave you, I'll post a video of Russian dance troupe Barynya performing цыганка/цыганский (Russian Roma "Gypsy") dance.

And more Russian dance from Barynya:

Oh, and don't forget to follow this blog in your email to have immediate updates in your inbox~ just fill in your email in the little box on the side bar to the right.

See you all wednesday at 7pm at the Inner Bean!
(see you next week!)

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

This evening we'll be enjoying some Russian chocolates and talking about food in Russia! Suppose you wanted to go grocery shopping~ you may need to know these words:
